A rare opportunity to own a cast bronze head and shoulders of WW1 Canadian Air Ace William Barker VC. This measures 58cm tall by 35cm wide. It is extremely heavy in that it took three people to lift in place. The bust shows Barker in a flying helmet with goggles and a collared flying jacket. There is no artist mark or signature. I bought the bust from an antiques dealer in Lytham on a whim. I was told that the bust was of a Canadian pilot William Barker. It was only when I researched about him, did I realise what a significant person he was "Canada's most decorated war hero."

I bought a biography of Barker VC written by Canadian author Wayne Relph the opening blurb reads -

"When William Barker died in an air crash in march 1930 his state funeral was the largest in Toronto. The cortege was two miles long with 2000 uniformed men as escort and 50,000 spectators looking on."

"He was after all a magnificent airman, a great war hero and holder of the Victoria Cross, the DSO and Bar, the MC and two Bars, the Croix-de Guerre, two Italian Silver Medals for Valour and three Mentions-in-Despatches. Moreover he had 50 Great War victories in the air to his credit."
