Perhaps the most famous of German pilots, Adolf Galland flew in the Spanish Civil War and on the Western Front during WW2. He flew the Messerschmitt 109 with JG26 and JG27 before commanding JV44 flying the ME262 jet fighter with the rank of General. He flew in the great battles of Poland, France and Britain, leading the elite JG26, the Abbeville Boys. He flew in combat against the RAF’s best, including Douglas Bader, Johnny Johnson and Bob Stanford Tuck. He was the only general to lead a squadron into battle and became the youngest general in the German High Command. He scored an incredible 104 victories in his flying career. He died in 1996.

Appointed Inspector General of Germany’s Fighter Arm in 1941, Galland was responsible for all Luftwaffe day and night fighters. But after continual disputes with  Goering he was sacked in 1944, and formed his famous JV-44 Wing, flying Me262’s jets in the final Defence of the Reich.
