A truly superb Georgian or early Victorian Officers Shoulder Belt Plate. Silver plated backplate 3.75 inches by 3 inches. On this a hobnailed silver star, on this in gilt, a crown and strap with the order of the garter motto "honi soit qui mal y pense" (Evil be to those who evil think). Within this a red enamel on silver domed cross of St George beneath this a gilt strap with Royal North Gloucester.

This unit, one of the earliest militia battalions, was first formed  in 1761 and received the Royal title in 1795. They were embodied and stood down a number times and were finally transferred around 1872 and became associated with the 28th Foot (North Gloucester Regiment) and based in Bristol. They finally became the 4th BattalionThe Gloucester Regiment in 1881. Superb.
