The Bell Topped Shako or Regency Shako was introduced in 1829. It is made of black beaver fur with a leather top and peak and gilt chinscales.

The ball tuft was introduced in 1835, dark green for Light Infantry Regiments. The badge was a large gilt star surmounted by the crown and superimposed on the star was a smaller silver star the 53rd featured a Maltese cross, with the battle honours Peninsula-Nieuport-St Lucia-Talavera-Vittoria-Salamanca-Toulouse-Nivelle-Tournay-Pyrenees. To the centre the numerals 53.

From 1829-1840 the regiment served at Malta, Gibralta and the Ionian Islands in 1844 they served in India for 16 years. They later became The Kings Shropshire Light Infantry.
