This MuK5 Ground Assault Badge is in excellent condition. It is made of zinc with most of the original finish. The eagle is a separate piece and is riveted to the body of the badge. The clouds and lightning bolt have a dark colour with lighter tones on the high points for contrast.
The badge was awarded to personnel who had survived three separate ground combat actions, had been wounded, or had received another decoration during such actions.
Ground Assault Badge of the Luftwaffe (Erdkampfabzeichen der Luftwaffe), a German military decoration from World War II. It was awarded to Luftwaffe personnel for participating in ground combat operations alongside the army.
Central Motif: Features a silver eagle clutching a swastika, swooping down from a dark, stylized storm cloud.
Lightning Bolt: A large, prominent lightning bolt strikes the ground from the cloud, symbolizing the "blitz" or striking power of the Luftwaffe on the ground.
Wreath: The entire central scene is enclosed within an oval oak leaf wreath.
Materials: This example is a two-piece construction, as evidenced by the silvered eagle being a separate piece attached to the darkened zinc or alloy body.
Historical Background
The badge was instituted on March 31, 1942, by Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring. It was primarily intended for members of Luftwaffe Field Divisions, Paratroopers (Fallschirmjäger), and Flak (anti-aircraft) crews who were increasingly pressed into frontline infantry roles as the war progressed. To qualify, an individual typically had to participate in three separate combat actions on different days.
